MyGearGuru Privacy Policy

Effective Date: 3/1/2026

Introduction

When it comes to your personal data, MyGearGuru, which is a product of Sunset Technologies, Inc. (collectively referred to as "Sunset," "MyGearGuru," "GearGuru," "we" or "us"), as well as our employees, contractors and service providers, are committed to providing you with transparency and choice. We process personal data in accordance with applicable law, while balancing the relevant interests of our consumers, our repair shop partners, ourselves, and other stakeholders.

We do not, and will not without your consent, sell, lease, or rent your personal information to third parties for monetary or other valuable consideration.

This Privacy Policy ("Policy") describes how we collect, use, and share personal data through our website, mobile app, and related services (collectively, the "Services") that connect consumers experiencing vehicle problems with independent automotive repair shops. It also describes the choices available to you regarding your personal data.

You do not need to create an account to browse our website. However, to use certain features — such as submitting a vehicle issue, requesting a callback, or booking an appointment with a repair shop — you must create an account and agree to our Terms of Service.

Personal Data We Collect

We collect personal data in the following ways:

  • Directly from you — when you create an account, describe a vehicle issue, upload photos or a description of symptoms, request a callback, or book an appointment with a repair shop.
  • Automatically — through your use of our website and app (device data, app interaction data, and approximate location, where permitted).
  • From repair shop partners — such as booking confirmations, feedback, or updates related to a referral we sent them.

Categories of Personal Data

  • Identifiers and contact information: name, email address, phone number, mailing/service address, and account credentials.
  • Vehicle information: year, make, model, mileage, and (where you provide it) VIN.
  • Diagnostic and issue information: your description of the problem, dashboard warning lights, photos, audio, or video you submit, and any diagnostic codes or symptom data you or your vehicle provide.
  • Location information: your general location (e.g., city/ZIP code) used to match you with nearby independent repair shops, and precise location if you enable location services on your device.
  • Usage and engagement data: pages viewed, features used, impressions, clicks, callback requests, and bookings — used to operate and improve the Services and to determine which shop referrals were generated.
  • Device and technical data: IP address, browser/device type, operating system, and similar diagnostic data collected automatically when you use our app or website.
  • Communications: records of calls, texts, chats, or emails between you and us, or (where applicable) between you and a shop partner facilitated through the Services.

We currently do not process consumer payment card data. GearGuru's Services are free for consumers to use; independent repair shops pay us separately for referrals and bookings generated through the platform.

How and Why We Use Your Personal Data

We use your personal data to:

  • Create and manage your account and verify your identity;
  • Match you with independent repair shops based on your location, vehicle, and described issue;
  • Facilitate callback requests and bookings between you and repair shops;
  • Provide our AI-assisted diagnostic feature (see below), customer support, and troubleshooting;
  • Communicate with you about your account, requests, and bookings;
  • Send you marketing communications, where permitted and subject to your choices (see “Marketing Communications” below);
  • Analyze and improve the Services, including usage analytics and product development;
  • Detect, prevent, and address fraud, abuse, or security issues; and
  • Comply with our legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Service.

We process your personal data on the following legal bases, as applicable: to perform our contract with you (providing the Services you request), based on your consent (e.g., marketing), to comply with legal obligations, and for our legitimate business interests (e.g., improving the Services, security, and fraud prevention).

Sharing Your Personal Data

Repair Shop Partners. The core purpose of our Services is to connect you with independent repair shops. When you request a callback or booking, we share the personal data necessary to fulfill that request with the relevant shop(s) — typically your name, contact information, vehicle information, and description of the issue. Repair shop partners are independent businesses, not owned or controlled by GearGuru, and they are responsible for their own use of your data once it is shared for the purpose of servicing your request. We contractually require shop partners to use this data only to respond to and fulfill your request, and not for unrelated purposes.

Service Providers. We use contractors and service providers (such as our cloud hosting and database provider, analytics providers, and communication tools) to operate the Services on our behalf. We require these providers to keep your data confidential and prohibit them from using it for their own purposes.

Corporate Affiliates. We may share your data with other companies under common ownership with Sunset Technologies, Inc.

Legal and Safety. We may disclose personal data where required by law, subpoena, or other legal process, to enforce our legal rights, to prevent fraud, or to protect the safety of any person.

Business Transfers. We may share personal data in connection with a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets.

We do not sell your personal data, and we do not share your personal data with third parties for their own independent marketing purposes without your consent.

Mobile Information. No mobile phone number or SMS opt-in/consent data collected as part of our text messaging program is shared with third parties or affiliates for their marketing or promotional purposes. This does not apply to our service providers who help us operate the text messaging program itself (e.g., our SMS delivery platform), or to sharing with repair shop partners strictly as needed to fulfill a callback or booking request you initiated.

Retention and Deletion

We retain your personal data only as long as necessary to provide the Services, maintain our business records, comply with legal obligations, and resolve disputes. When personal data is no longer needed for these purposes, we securely delete or de-identify it.

How We Protect Your Personal Data

We use reasonable physical, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect your personal data, including access controls, encryption in transit, and monitoring of our systems. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure; if you believe you've found a security issue, please contact us at security@mygearguru.ai.

Your Privacy Rights

Depending on your state of residence, you may have the right to:

  • Know what personal data we have collected about you;
  • Access a copy of your personal data;
  • Correct inaccurate personal data;
  • Delete your personal data;
  • Opt out of the sale or "sharing" of personal data (we do not sell or share data for cross-context behavioral advertising);
  • Opt out of certain automated processing; and
  • Not be discriminated against for exercising these rights.

These rights may arise under the California Consumer Privacy Act (as amended by the CPRA), the Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act, and similar laws in other states as we expand. To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details below. We will verify your identity before fulfilling your request.

Marketing Communications

With your consent, we may send you updates, tips, or promotions related to vehicle maintenance and the Services. You can opt out at any time using the unsubscribe link in any marketing email or by adjusting your notification preferences in the app. We will continue to send you transactional messages related to your account, callback requests, and bookings regardless of your marketing preferences, as these are necessary to provide the Services.

Text Messaging (SMS) Program

If you provide your mobile phone number and opt in, MyGearGuru may send you text messages related to your account, callback requests, and bookings (transactional messages), and — only with your separate consent — marketing messages about our Services.

  • Message frequency varies based on your activity (e.g., account updates, callback and booking confirmations).
  • Message and data rates may apply.
  • You can opt out of text messages at any time by replying STOP. You will receive a one-time confirmation message that you have been unsubscribed. After that, you will no longer receive messages, unless you re-opt in.
  • For help, reply HELP or contact us at support@mygearguru.ai.
  • Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.

No mobile information will be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. All other categories of information collected as part of the SMS program — including opt-in status and consent — exclude text messaging originator opt-in data and consent from sharing with any third parties, other than the service providers who help us deliver the messages you requested.

Cookies and Tracking Technologies

Our website and app use cookies and similar technologies (such as pixels and local storage) to:

  • Keep you logged in and remember your preferences;
  • Understand how visitors use our website and app; and
  • Measure the effectiveness of our marketing.

You can control cookies through your browser settings. Disabling cookies may limit some website functionality. We do not currently serve third-party interest-based advertising on our own Services.

Our AI-Assisted Diagnostic Feature

GearGuru may offer a feature that suggests possible causes of a vehicle issue (for example, a check engine light) based on information you provide (such as year, make, model, mileage, and symptoms) and aggregated repair-industry data sources. This feature:

  • Provides informational, probability-based suggestions only — it is not a diagnosis, and it does not replace inspection by a qualified repair professional;
  • Does not make any legal or similarly significant decision about you; and
  • Is designed to help route you to an appropriate independent repair shop for an in-person or professional assessment.

Children's Privacy

Our Services are not directed to, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from, children under 13 (or the relevant age of consent in your jurisdiction). If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us so we can delete it.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Policy from time to time. If we make material changes to how we collect, use, or share your personal data, we will notify you by email or through a notice on the Services prior to the change taking effect. We encourage you to review this page periodically.

Links to Other Websites

Our Services may link to websites operated by repair shop partners or other third parties, including their own booking or payment pages. This Policy does not apply to those third-party sites, and we encourage you to review their privacy policies.
